sbX Construction Update for Oct. 29- Nov. 2

The sbX weekly construction update lists the places, dates, times and details of construction activity currently taking place in San Bernardino in preparation for the sbX bus rapid transit project.

Kendall Drive and Palm Avenue Park-and-Ride-Facility

  • Parameters: South of Kendall Drive and Palm Avenue intersection
  • Day Work: Mon. – Fri. from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily
  • Specifics: Grading Activities, landscaping activities, electrical activities
  • LANE CLOSURE: No traffic control in effect

CSUSB

  • Parameters: New bus station location on campus
  • Day Work: Mon. – Fri. from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily
  • Specifics: NA
  • LANE CLOSURE: No traffic control in effect.

Marshall Blvd. Park-and-Ride Facility

  • Parameters: Northeast & northwest corners of E Street and Marshall Blvd.
  • Day Work: Mon. – Fri. from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily
  • Specifics: Work on bus pads continues, parking lot construction, electrical activities, lighting activities
  • LANE CLOSURE: Traffic control in effect

E Street

  • Parameters: Select locations between 10th Street and Hospitality Lane
  • Day Work: Mon. – Fri. 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily
  • Night Work: Mon. – Fri. from 9 p.m. to 7 a.m. nightly
  • Specifics: Utility relocations, driveway, sidewalk, curb and gutter work, domestic water work, storm drain activities, traffic signal activities, electrical activities
  • LANE CLOSURE: Traffic control in effect in some areas along E Street between 10th Street and Hospitality Lane.

 Hospitality Lane

  • Parameters: Select locations between E Street and Tippecanoe Avenue
  • Night Work: Mon. – Fri. from 10 p.m. to 7 a.m.
  • Intermittent Day Work
  • Specifics: Electrical activities, traffic signal activities, landscaping removal activities, irrigation activities
  • LANE CLOSURE: Traffic control in effect along Hospitality Lane between E Street and Tippecanoe Avenue.

 Various Bus Station Locations

  • Parameters: Little Mountain Drive, Shandin Hills Drive, Marshall Boulevard, Highland Avenue, Baseline Street
  • Day Work: Mon. – Fri. 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily
  • Night Work: Mon. – Fri. from 9 p.m. to 7 a.m. nightly
  • Specifics: Platform structure activities, curb and gutter work, storm drain construction, bus pad construction, utility activities
  • LANE CLOSURE: Traffic control in effect at some locations.
To establish a safe work environment for crews and the public, the construction crew has implemented traffic control measures that allow for at least one lane in each direction to be open during construction. Maintaining access to businesses is a high priority as part of this project. As such, signage is placed throughout the corridor to inform the public that they are open for business.

It is the beginning of an intermodal public transit system in the San Bernardino Valley that will help reduce vehicle congestion while providing the public an environmentally friendly alternative that is sophisticated, cost effective, and time efficient.

The 15.7-mile corridor spans between northern San Bernardino and Loma Linda. It will include 16 art-inspired stations at key university, government, business, entertainment and medical centers as well as four park-and-ride facilities.

First sbX bus arrives at Omnitrans

The first of the new sbX articulated buses arrived at Omnitrans the end of last month. It’s so new, in fact, that it still has shrink wrap on the front and paper covers on the carpet. We thought we’d take you on a tour of what you can expect to see the first time you board when the sbX Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) begins in early 2014.

When viewing the sbX bus from the outside, you’re immediately struck by how long the vehicle actually is. At 60-feet, it’s a full 20-feet longer than our regular, fixed-route buses.  It also has five doors, two on the driver’s side and three on the opposite side. Five doors are necessary for the express vehicles in order to accommodate both center platform stations and curbside service.

Bus passes and fares will be the same for both the Omnitrans fixed-routes and the Sbx express service, and bus pass vending machines will be available at selected stations. There is a fare box at the driver entrance and two scanners at rear entrances.  Simply swipe your pass and you’re good to go.

The inside of the bus feels bright, spacious and comfortable. There are 41 passenger seats and a standing capacity of 65.

On either side of the aisle in rear entrance of the sbX bus are two interior bicycle racks that can hold up to 4 bikes apiece.

The ramps on the sbX bus provide almost level docking for greater ease in the boarding of bicycles and wheelchairs.

The front of the sbX bus has fold-up seats to accommodate up to four wheelchairs, two of them forward-facing and two rear-facing, depending  upon the rider’s preference.

sbX uses  Q’Straint Wheelchair securement, one of the the world’s most effective wheelchair passenger safety solutions for public transportation

When you are riding sbX BRT, you never have to worry about your cell phone, tablet or computer running out of juice. Just plug your device into one of the electrical outlets available overhead. Each sbX bus also has wifi capabilities.

And finally, if you really want to have fun, grab one of the four seats available within the articulated section of the bus. There’s lots of leg room and you get a bit more sway in your ride!

Twelve more of the sbX vehicles are due to arrive over the next 12 months, and service  is scheduled to begin in early 2014.

Ironworker proud of role in sbX construction

Ivan Ventura fastens a canopy roof frame of the Highland St. Station to a platform post

Ivan Ventura grew up in Rialto but his heart – and his home – are in San Bernardino. During the day, the 24-year-old ironworker can be seen along the Omnitrans sbX corridor mounting canopy frames at station platforms throughout northern San Bernardino. At the end of the day, he heads home to be with his family in a house he recently purchased in northern San Bernardino, not far from Glen Helen Regional Park.

“This is the ideal job for me,” Ventura said. “You can’t always choose where to work, but I wouldn’t want to be anywhere else.”

It wasn’t always this easy for him. Fresh out of a four-month apprenticeship with Reinforcing Ironworkers Local 416 of La Palma, one of Ventura’s first assignments was nearly 200 miles away, at a solar power plant construction project near Primm, Nevada, where he was involved with installing panels. Ventura is proud to be a part of the team constructing the first of 10 planned BRT corridors in the San Bernardino Valley.

“It’s a matter of civic pride,” he said. “As long as people take care of it and it stays free of graffiti and other symbols of urban decay, I think it will really help bring this city back.”

In a city with an unemployment rate of 16.6 percent, according to the July 2012 report from the California Employment Development Department, Ventura is one resident fortunate to have remained gainfully employed throughout his young adult life. That’s important because the sbX project has created more than 200 jobs. About one-third of those jobs are occupied by residents of San Bernardino County.

 Hospitality Lane

  • Parameters: Select locations between E Street and Tippecanoe Avenue
  • Night Work: Mon. – Fri. from 10 p.m. to 7 a.m.
